Domestic Violence Victims To Find Safety At Glendale Fire Stations.
A partnership between YWCA and The City of Glendale ensuring victims have immediate access to safety
As part of its Domestic Violence Awareness Month campaign, the YWCA Glendale and Pasadena has launched a new partnership with the City of Glendale, designating all Glendale Fire Department stations as safe havens for victims of domestic violence.
“This collaboration centers on honoring survivors’ agency, recognizing that healing begins with choice,” said Debra Suh, CEO of YWCA Glendale and Pasadena. “Whether a domestic violence survivor is seeking immediate shelter, connection to advocacy services, or simply a moment of safety to regroup, fire stations now serve as a trusted point of access.”
Through the new partnership, all Glendale fire stations will serve as designated safe havens, providing immediate, confidential support to individuals fleeing domestic violence. Survivors can seek shelter and assistance at any fire station, where trained personnel will connect them directly to the YWCA’s 24/7 crisis hotline and emergency services.
At a community event held at Fire Station 21, the YWCA Glendale and Pasadena, in partnership with the Glendale Commission on the Status of Women, hosted its annual Purple Tie Awards. During the ceremony, Fire Chief Jeff Brooks received the Purple Tie Award in recognition of his leadership and the Glendale Fire Department’s commitment to community service.
The YWCA’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month campaign is symbolized by the color purple—a call to stand in solidarity with survivors.
“Glendale fire stations have always been places where our community can turn in times of need, and this partnership with the YWCA strengthens that role,” said Brooks. “By formally designating every fire station as a safe haven, we are ensuring that individuals facing domestic violence have immediate access to safety, compassion, and critical resources.”
Fire department personnel will receive specialized training from YWCA Glendale and Pasadena on recognizing the dynamics of domestic violence and creating a physically and emotionally safe environment for survivors.
YWCA Glendale and Pasadena’s mission is to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. The City of Glendale Commission on the Status of Women serves as an advisory body to the Glendale City Council and is dedicated to supporting the well-being of women and girls, recommending policies and programs that advance equity in Glendale.
